KIGALI (AFP) — Rwanda on Wednesday charged that the remains of genocide victims buried in neighbouring Uganda are neglected and have been used by in acts of witchcraft there.

Several officials made the accusation following a Rwandan parliamentary mission to Uganda last week but the authorities in Kampala flatly denied the charges.

“We have found that the remains are currently being used in witchcraft and various acts of sorcery,” Evariste Kalisa, who chairs the Rwandan parliament’s human rights committee, told AFP.

During the 1994 genocide of the Tutsi minority which saw at least 800,000 people killed within weeks, thousands of bodies ended up in Lake Victoria…

Varying estimates put the number of genocide victims summarily buried in Uganda between 8,000 and 20,000.

“This situation is serious because it is the first time that witchcraft is being practised with the remains of genocide victims,” said Theodore Simburudali, chairman of Ibuka, the main genocide survivors’ association.
